Healthy Lifestyle Tip: Slimming Secret
Wednesday, 18th of May 2011
Drinking water before each meal has been shown to help promote weight loss, according to a new study. Brenda Davy, PhD, associate professor of nutrition at Virginia Tech and senior author of the study, says that drinking about two 235ml glasses of water before meals helps people melt the kilograms away.
“Water helps fill up your stomach, which may make you less hungry,” says Brenda Davy. “Plus, you’ll save calories if the water is replacing regular soft drink, juice or sweetened teas.”
Davy points out that everyday experience has suggested that water promotes weight loss, but little scientific information has been offered on the topic. “We found in earlier studies that people who drank two cups of water right before eating a meal ate between 75 and 90 fewer calories during the meal." Davy adds that no one knows how much water people should drink daily, and that the federal Institute of Medicine says healthy people can let thirst be their guide.

Some easy ways to help you get your fill:
- Add fruit: Citrus fruits, such as lemons, limes and oranges, are classic water enhancers. Try crushing fresh raspberries or adding strawberry slices.
- Add a slice: Cucumber or mint leaf will add a refreshing flavour.
- Add sparkle: Mix with bubbly carbonated water or flavoured carbonated water.
- Add warmth: Try bouillons or broths (choose low-fat and low-sodium) or tea.
