Volunteering At The Y Brings Joy And Purpose To Julia's Life.

When she was 10 days old, Julia was given just 5 hours to live; now aged 27, she is a tiny adult with big dreams and the Y is helping to make them come true.

Julia has CHARGE syndrome, which among other health issues has left her profoundly deaf, unable to speak, and with significant intellectual delays. Needless to say, Julia’s life presents many challenges.

Most adults underestimate or just don’t take the time to consider the sense of purpose derived from work; the feeling of belonging of being part of something and making a contribution. For Julia, the concept of work could well have been an unrealistic dream, but Julia and the Y thought differently.

Julia began work as a volunteer at the Mt Annan Leisure Centre one day a week; basic tasks like cleaning and tidying up. Soon one day became two and two became three. In addition to cleaning she assists with administration; photocopying and making up member information packs.

Developing responsibilities have brought with them developing confidence in Julia. The staff have become more aware of her abilities and less aware of her disabilities; it has been a very mutually beneficial relationship.

“Julia is up and dressed for work at 6am with such enthusiasm, she wears her uniform with pride. She politely tells her co-workers not to interfere with her jobs and approaches her work with dedication. She is made to feel safe and secure but more so, welcome and valued.”

Marie. Julia’s mum.
